About Our Petition
In February 2023, we launched our website to ask NOLSies to petition the NOLS Board to answer 4 basic questions about NOLS' Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). In July 2023, we concluded our petition drive.

WE've increased our numbers

In December 2022, twenty-one NOLSies signed our initial DEI Assessment Report.

By July 2023, over 170 NOLSies have signed our petition to ask the NOLS Board to address and answer four basic questions about NOLS’ DEI.

Our newsletters go to over 400 NOLsies who are either subscribers or are on our NOLSie email list.

We have concluded the petition drive and will invite NOLS Board members to meet with us in person to share who from the greater NOLS community has joined us. NOTE: we will not send online a list of the signatories.
WE've broadened our base

When NOLS Self-Assembly started, most of us were early pre-1985 NOLSies.

Today, more than 50% of us took our first NOLS course after 1984.

NOLSies from 1965 to 2022 have joined us.

We all share a concern about how a wayward DEI implementation is undermining the school's educational foundation.

Discussions with Stuart Harris, NOLS Board Chair, and Sandy Colhoun, NOLS interim President, seemed promising earlier in 2023, but to date we have seen very little real change.
To make real and lasting change,
NOLS could take these first steps

Answer four basic questions about its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiative.

Rewrite the Instructor Course application.

Require employees who are directly responsible for expeditions or course curriculum to go on a NOLS expedition.

Allow freedom of expression and unblock our members’ NOLS Facebook Alumni accounts.

Evaluate how faculty are being being recruited, trained and certified to ensure faculty competence.
