NOLS Needs to Have a DEI Conversation

"You have a conversation. You look at policies. You talk about the pros and cons of these policies, the worthiness and unworthiness and you act accordingly. This is what is supposed to happen."

Erec Smith, PH.D. and Professor of Rhetoric at York College of PA

Former DEI Trainer Erec Smith believes today’s DEI training is doing more harm than good.

“The solutions don’t match the problem. And I think we can have conversations about the solution but we are not doing that.”

The attached YouTube video, a conversation between Erec Smith and John Stossel, is 30 minutes long. We encourage everyone to watch it start to finish. But if you have only a few minutes to spare, please click on any of the time bookmarks below to better understand his perspective.

3:35 Meaning of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

5:16 Racial inequity and emphasis on victimhood

7:48 Consequences of anti-bias training

17:34 You need logic and reason to build things

19:50 The narrative of oppressor,oppressed

24:22 Value of land acknowledgement

26:29 EMC Equality Merit and Colorblindness

We believe that NOLS would benefit from Professor Smith’s perspective on NOLS’ DEI implementation and encourage the NOLS Board to reach out to Erec Smith and ask him to participate in their ongoing NOLS DEI assessment. To compensate Professor Smith for his time and effort, NOLS Self-Assembly will gladly pay NOLS for all related fees and expenses.

NOLS Self-Assembly

Our objective is to serve as a link between NOLS and the greater NOLS community for an open discussion about how NOLS is staying true to its mission and the practice of expedition behavior while simultaneously fundraising $10,000,000 to cover operating losses, working on a new strategic plan and searching for a new president .
